modjadji & baleni camps

Modjadji Camp

Modjadji Camp is situated inside the Modjadji Cycad Reserve not far from Tzaneen. This camp lies within the domain of the mystical Rain Queen, hereditary ruler of the Lobedu people. Typical activities whilst staying at Modjadji Camp:

  • Our Ivory Route guide will accompany us into the local village to view and buy some of the impressive pottery and beadwork made by the local people.
  • We also have the option of a tour of the Royal Kraal, located nearby to the camp. This gives an in-depth understanding of the Lobedu people and their customs.
  • We will be treated to a traditional dancing display by dancers from the surrounding community.
  • At night we are entertained by the stories and legends of the Lobedu people, related by the camp staff around a roaring campfire.
  • In the early morning we put on our walking shoes for an easy walking trail through the Modjadji Cycad Reserve, expertly led by our Ivory Route guide. The reserve is home to hundreds of cycads, some over 800-years old and reaching 15 metres. The information centre and the viewsite at the top of the reserve are both well worth a visit.
  • Our Ivory Route guide will accompany us to the Lebjeng archeological site where remains of the ancient Royal Kraal can be seen. Here we reconcile the legends and stories told around the campfire with the facts as to the origins of the Modjadji.

Baleni Camp

Located on the Tropic of Capricorn, not far from the Kruger National Park fence, Baleni Camp nestles in a remote and tranquil mopane forest. Adjacent to the Baleni mineral hot spring on the banks of the Klein Letaba River at Sautini, " place of salt ", the area is regarded as a super-natural place by the local Tsonga people. Typical activities whilst staying at Baleni Camp:

  • Led by our expert guides, we head off to observe the ancient practice of salt extraction from the mineral rich water from the fountain. This century old salt making process is still practiced by the local Shangaan women, with all the traditional rituals.
  • Baleni is a place of many myths and legends, and at night we will be entertained with stories and folklore by the camp staff around a roaring campfire.
  • Our Ivory Route guide will accompany us on a visit to one of the nearby villages to learn more about the Shangaan culture. Here we can view and buy some of the artifacts made by the local people, and experience the day-to-day lifestyle of a traditional rural African family.
  • In the village we will be treated to a traditional dancing display by dancers from the surrounding community – this is a real celebration of their culture, an event not to be missed!!
